Upon hearing her outburst, he looked up from the book and quirked his head somewhat. "Yes, I am. But we're not at school, now are we? So I don't see why that would be an issue." he said, chuckling slightly. He continued in mock dejection. "But I understand if you don't want to be seen with a professor. I guess it would be lame to have one as a friend or something."
He looked to Alex. "Right?" he continued, still in the same sad tone.

Alex grinned broadly, still cradling 'his' Draconomicon, thirteenth edition (since the book's renaming) close. It was somewhat of a ritual that served several purposes - one, to see if anyone stricter was around, and two, to see what Nick's mood was. When it came to addressing, better safe than sorry. There were plenty more ways to get in trouble, and plenty out for him already. One more was not helpful.
"Yup, he's a professor, but he's not really... uh.. overstrict about it. Who would have thought, right?" As he spoke, he glanced to Nick, still grinning - hopefully disarmingly, probably somewhat impishly, and then turned his attention back to academics.
"Oh yeah! Hey, Nick - you have to check this out. You think that's cool? They've got a new book out, too - Anthology of the Sphinx." He shifted the Draconomicon, clearly reluctant to part with it even for a second, to a table, and fetched in his bag for his one extra book; a giant tome that probably accounted for half of the weight. "It's bigger than it looks, too. 'Sgot every riddle, story, poem, everything - that this one sphinx knew. I saw it... and had to get it. I mean, how could I not, right?"
Anthology was completely worth its heightened cost - it was charmed to appear thinner, and be lighter, than it ought to be. From paging through the thin pages, Alex had determined that were this all laid out, it would span several volumes. Even more amazing was the fact that this was all just from the knowledge of one sphinx, and that the author had somehow convinced it to cooperate. Sphinxes were not known for gentle nature.

"Really?" he said, placing aside the Draconomicon and looking at the Anthology. He whistled in surprise at its weight but it did not force his arms any lower when he held it. After flipping through a few pages, he gently gave it back to Alex and smiled.
"That's something I think Althea would love. Good choice though. How they got a sphinx's cooperation I'll never know, but nonetheless." he said rather approvingly and with a smile. With the same casual air, he asked "I hope your summer's been treating you well. Looking forward to come back to school?"

Neoma was breathing heavily. She had finally grabbed the last book that she would need for the term, and felt like she had just finished running a marathon. Even so, it would seem that the finish line had yet to be crossed.
"That will be 17 Galleons and 4 Knuts please." Said the lady at the cash register, who's tone of voice clearly stated that she was either bored out of her mind or going to shoot herself at any moment.
This did very little to calm Neoma, who hadn't yet deciphered this new currency. Wizarding money was so different to what she was used to. She took a small navy colored pouch and began taking each coin out one by one. If she came across what she thought to be a sickle, she replaced back into the bag.
When she had gotten three Galleons and two Knuts onto the counter, the cashier began to drum her very long finger nails on the wooden counter. There was also huffling and muffling coming from those in line to pay. Apparently they were surprised that someone as young looking as Neoma was dressed in such painfully obvious Muggle style clothing.
Neoma didn't know any of this, and her stress level rose. She mumbled an apology, and began frantically looking for what she needed to pay for her books and get out of here. Why me? She thought to herself.

Nicholas' green eyed gaze shifted slightly as his ears perked up, hearing the humdrum commotion of the impatient line of wizards and witches. At the forefront was Neoma, struggling to pay for her books.
"Hold onto that thought, would you Alex? Excuse me, for a second. Sorry" he said, at first sounding distracted but apologizing in earnest. His long legs carried him swiftly to the counter, and he slowly eased his way through the line, hand on the hilt of his sword as to make sure not to prod anyway accidentally. Most grumbled at the inconvenience of the large man making his way through, others muttering their disbelief of the weapon at his side, and a handful began to speak in hushed tones of recognition.
Finally, he arrived to the counter and looked to the cash for the price. Deftly, he fished in his pouch and quickly tossed out 15 galleons onto the counter and took the change from the droll cashier.
"Thank you very much. Take care." he responded as he picked up Neoma's books, looking down to her.
"Coming?" he asked kindly, books under one arm, other hand on the hilt of his sword. Odd how unthreatening he was.

Neoma didn't know what to say, but to claim via observation that she was overjoyed, was a definite understatement. Her face lit up with a beaming smile of immense gratitude. She quickly turned to gather up her pouch of coins, fixed her bag and then hurried after her soon-to-be Professor.
"Thank ye very much!" She said when she was walking in stride with the tall man. She looked up at him, eyelashes fluttering. This place... this, world, wasn't going to be all that bad after all.
"I do hope all the other Professors at Hogwarts are as nice as you Sir.. I mean; Nik." She smiled. She didn't know how to repay such kindness.

As he continued to walk alongside her, he looked back to Alex who continued to ponder the books. "I'm sorry Alex, but we need to keep going. We can chat some other time, you know where my office is. Take care!" he said, waving goodbye with his left hand, letting the cape conceal his signature weapon.
He looked to Neoma and smiled as he did so. "It was not problem at all, Madmoiselle Tsylence. It's my duty and honour to help." he responded politely. "The staff at Hogwarts is definately full of very interesting people, but many are rather wonderful. There are quite the few number of new teachers this year though, but I doubt that Headmistress Pierce would hire anyone less than talented to teach."
He gave the young girl an evaluatory look and nodded. "I think it's time we got you some proper robes and attire, don't you think? We can head on over to Madam Malkin's, and I'll explain the currency on the way. Sound like a plan?" he asked, his hand absentmindedly slipping back to rest on the handle of his sword.

Alex glanced up, and waved. "Oh, okay. See you at school!" he called cheerfully, and returned back to his perusal. He was much like a kid in a proverbial candy store when it came to books... so many, so little time... what to pick? As a rule, he had learned by now to get everything else first, so he did not have to worry about lack of budget for anything else, and could spend the rest of the day browsing. Part of him was tempted to go along and help, but if Nick was with her, then the girl, a first-year, definitely, should be completely fine.
Nick had that effect on people. If you were with him, you were safe. He watched the two leave, scolded Mika for sharpening her claws on a bookcase and apologized as one of the regulars (who therefore knew him by name) fixed the damage. Not being permitted to perform magic outside of Hogwarts at the moment had its downsides, but the moment he got that clearance...
((*laughs* More or less a cameo... ah, well.))

((OOC: This is going to be short, I'm real sorry))
Neoma looked down at herself, and her face contorted in disbelief. She kept up with Nicholas, and looked up at him.
"What's wrong with my clothes?" She exclaimed.
Asides from that statement, Neoma agreed that the rest sounded like a good plan. She followed Nicholas towards what looked like another store.

Nicholas gave a short, but cheerful laugh at her exclamation and placed a scarred hand gently onto her shoulder. "There's nothing wrong with your clothing, my dear, but they aren't exactly school attire." he said, chuckling still. Her gently led her down the bustling streets, people giving the tall professor somewhat of a berth when they approached his vicinity as he explained the wizarding world currency. He still talked good naturedly, occasionally giving a smile and a nod to the odd passerby.
Finally, they arrived to Madam Malkin's shop and Nicholas looked to the familiar student standing outside. He looked back to Neoma and motioned with his head to the shop. "Go on in and get yourself fitted. I don't think you need my help with any of that, and no worries. Madam Malkin is a very kind witch."
He returned his gaze to the young man and he gave him a nod. "Good day, Master Donall. How are you today." he asked, disarmingly.

This was not Dónall Kennedy's lucky day.
First, he had been caught in an unnecessary argument with an insufferable prat of a Ravenclaw, and now he had been spotted by the Gryffindor Head of House before he could even find himself a decent Butterbeer. It must be "Annoy Don Day" or something, because by Merlin's beard, this was not his idea of a good time.
"Hello, Sir Lannsman" he replied, making sure to put extra emphasis on the man's title. As if Gryffindors needed extra things to make them think highly of themselves. "I was rather fine until about a second ago."

"Uhh... sure Nik. I'll see you later I guess." Neoma had seen the older boy ahead of them, the same that Nicholas had just greeted warmly.
She looked at the older student, and immediately got the sense that she was not welcome. It was probably for the best.
Taking a deep breath, she walked towards and entered what was commonly known as Madam Malkin's. Time to fit in with the crowd.

With a slight sigh, he nodded his head in apology. "Well, I'm sorry to hear that Donall. You seem to be rather busy, and so I won't keep you. I guess my invitation to get a butterbeer or something wouldn't have interested you anyway. I'm sorry to have inconvenienced you." he said, sounding vaguely hurt but sincere in his invitation. "Take care then, Donall."
He sounded apologetic as he said so, bowing slightly. It was meant as a courteous gesture, not as a dismissal. In the way he had spoken, it sounded very much so like he felt he was in the wrong.

The Professor's reaction to his snide remark took Dónall very much by surprise, as it did every time. He still could not figure out why this one professor would never take his bait. Most people would either argue with him, like that Ravenclaw prat, or even most other professors. They would fight, or in the case of adults and those in authority, they woul talk down to him or back away in fright.
Sir Lannsman was a different story altogether, despite the fact that he had been a Gryffindor and was no the Head of that House. At Sir Lannsman's words, Don visibly changed the look on his face, but did not apologize for his own words.
Still tense, however, he replied. "Erm... Thank you for the offer, but you're right. I'm not interested, Sir." He stumbled on those words, the politeness behind them unfamiliar. Also, he did not make fun of the man when he used the word Sir. That had never happened before...
Before he could ponder his lack of insult and rudeness, Don turned on his heel and walked away as fast as he could without actually running away. It had been a starnge day, indeed.

Nicholas looked to Donall as her left, his feelings still hurt from the rudeness of the young man's initial attitude. He simply wanted to help the poor boy out of his shell, knowing that there there was a talented and good wizard deep down.
Deep, deep down.
Nicholas sighed and looked out to the crowd of Diagon Alley and began pondering the people, recent events and things to come, whistling a tune as he did so.
His hand remained beneath the cloak and close to the hilt of the sword at all times. He never even really noticed it himself.
