It was a chilly Saturday afternoon, and Dónall sat leaning against his favorite tree by the lake. He wore his regulation school pants, and a black hooded sweatshirt over a white button down oxford shirt. His legs were pulled up a bit, with a book opened against them.
This was always his favorite thing to do on a boring weekend day. A nice book and solitary afternoon were the best solution to his problems. Not that he would ever admit to having any problems, of course, but this was a welcome distraction from the pressures of the real world.
He had received an owl that morning, from his father. Seán Kennedy, Don's father, had a certain standard of success and intelligence that Dónall was expected to maintain; this letter served as a reminder.
He was not happy with his father's words or threats, especially the empty words of affection written in greeting and closing.
Now, he sat outside in the chilly autumn air, merely ignoring the world around him and delving deeper and deeper into the enchanted world of his novel.

It was one of those days, the ones everyone has where they just need to get away. Today was Alora's day. Taking a quiet stroll down by the lake was usually what cleared her mind from the stresses of Hogwarts work, students and teachers.
Wrapped up in a gray hoody with a blue scarf, she walked slowly towards the lake. Her slow walking the cause of thinking which, of course, was always dangerous in her case.
Closer and closer she got to an unknown figure, until she finally saw who it was 'Oh no, not again, she thought as she noticed Kennedy again. Honestly, she really was not ready for another argument so soon in the school year. But she felt she couldn't turn round and walk off, it would just look suspicious.

Don looked up from his book as he felt another person's presence near him. He caught sight of a blue scarf wrapped around a gray hooded sweatshirt, and then he found out who they belonged to.
'Hmm, and I thought the day couldn't get any worse,' he thought to himself. 'Seems I was highly mistaken.'
He nodded in the girl's direction, and spoke civilly. "Jannings."

Hearing his voice, she turned slightly towards him and put on a clearly fake smile before muttering "Kennedy". The smile from her face dropped quickly after, and she continued to walk.
Hoping he wouldn't actually begin to talk to her, she sped up with her head down, and hands in pockets.

'That smarmy prat! I try to be civil and she completely disregards any sort of exchange.'
Don seethed inside, but showed no emotion outwardly. He quickly got up and chased after her, stopping ahead and facing her. "Don't just turn your back on me."

Being rather on the short side really wasn't useful in situations like these. Stopping dead in her tracks she looked up at him, her hands still stuffed in her pockets. "Sorry, thought you would prefer to be alone," she answered in a rather sarcastic tone. She raised her eyebrows waiting for some kind of witty reply.

Looking down at her, he replied, "Yeah, I'd rather be alone. But, at this point, it just doesn't matter anymore."
"Just forget it, Jannings, not even your bright Ravenclaw mind could help you understand." Though he had just complemented her intelligence, he disguised it as a not so harsh insult.

She let out a half laugh, half sigh before looking away from him, "What is there not to understand about this? She wasn't being funny, but she really had no idea what he was talking about.
What exactly is he trying to say? He wants to be alone or not? she questioned.

"Look, it's been a really bollocksed day, and I have no desire to stand here and argue with you. If you'd like to have a civil conversation, I'd be willing to oblige, but I just can't deal with this right now."
Almost as soon as he'd said it, he regretted those words. Why in Merlin's world would he ever reveal anything like that to this Ravenclaw girl, and why would he offer to sit down and chat with anyone, least of all her?

"Well, that was a first. If you actually mean it, then ok a civil conversation would be ok."
Firstly, Alora couldn't believe that a Slytherin was offering to talk to her, let alone that it was Kennedy. Secondly, wishing she thought before she spoken, she instantly wanted to take what she just said back.

Don nodded and turned around without saying a word, and the look on his face was something he had never shown before. It was fear mixed in with a feeling of discomfort.
He merely walked back to the tree he had leaned against, hoping that Jannings girl was following. Or maybe that she ad changed her mind completely, and walked in the opposite direction.
Either way, he had no idea why he was doing this, but deep down he knew it was so not Slytherin of him, that he just didn't care.

She watched him walk back to where he was originally sitting. Looking back down at the floor, half of her wanted to follow him but the other half just wanted to leave. He was a Slytherin, this really wasn't like him.
Sighing, she turned on her heel and walked over to where he was standing,"Not meaning to sound nosey, but this really isn't like you. The person I met in Diagon Alley was like you, but this.. this is just not. I know you have no reason to tell me, but what is wrong?"
That was totally the wrong thing to ask. Blown the only chance for an alright conversation. But no.

Leaning back against the tree, with his arms crossed over his chest, he looked her directly in the eyes. "How would you know who I am if all you think is that I'm a smarmy bastard?"
His gaze dropped to the ground, and he said one more thing. "You people only see what I want you to see."

"What happened to the civil conversation? And ok, maybe you can be a bit smarmy sometimes but if thats what you want people to see, what do you expect them to think of you?" She stood infront of him, even though his gaze dropped she still looked towards his eyes. "Maybe I'm not the best person to talk to, but... Oh, it doesn't matter. I just thought that maybe we could actually try and be friends for once in our lives." Slightly shrugging, she dropped her gaze as well.

Don blinked twice, and said slowly, "...That was civil."
"I don't know. Just it's not in my place to say it as I never follow it myself, but I thought it's good to give people the benefit of the doubt. I'm not evil. Nowhere close to it. I guess that counts for something, these days..."
He uncrossed his arms and rubbed the back of his head a confused manner. "I... I suppose 'friends' would be asking a bit much. But what do you say to at least not being enemies?"
Dónall had no idea what he was doing at this point. He;d been acting strangely in his Defense class, answering questions and not ridiculing the professor. He even silently stood up for the knight to Anthony Corenthos! And now... Oh now he was truly in for it. He had openly agreed to stop berating this Ravenclaw whom he had argued with since he had first started at Hogwarts. Not to mention he hadn't been socializing with his House mates at all, which had prompted a demanding letter from his father.
Yes, he was most definitely going insane.
