...and again the Professor passed the same set of footprints he himself had made almost two turns ago. He finally stared up into the frigid sky, the cold temperatures of the season not ceasing, and exhaled deeply. None of this was helping as much as he had thought it would have. He had left a note to the Headmistress, mentioning that he would not make an appearance that night, like so many nights past. Orynn had been making himself very scarce lately, seeking resolution within his own thoughts. Despite his firm denial, he was not at all any better, and a part of him knew it.
He knew what he would have to do. The decision he would have to make, and address. He made a mental note to speak with Elsbeth when he had a moment, in person. It was time to really get down to the bottom of things.
It was long past nightfall, the dinner was likely over. Orynn had been so absorbed in his own mind as it pondered about matters such as his father, his family, his goals and ideals, his legacy. Now that he was had stopped walking though, and looked around him, he realized he was on the outskirts of the Forbidden Wood. What was more, was that there was a sound coming from within. Twigs cracking, feet running, but there was something else.
About twenty meters from where he stood, stumbling out from between some trees came a frightened human body. It almost stumbled, but recovered as it quickly ran away towards the castle, looking behind him/her occasionally.
Orynn's brow quirked as he walked quickly towards the individual. His wand still safely stowed beneath the sleeve of his long blue sweatshirt. A black scarf wrapped tightly around his neck, matching his dress pants under which he had on some long-johns to keep him warm. The man, as he could clearly see the outline now, was still within the Deputy's view. He took out his wand and pointed it to his throat, the words for the spell right on his lips. But he was interrupted.
There was one, and then two. The howls of a wolf, the sounds of a pack on the hunt. They sprang out from the Forbidden forest from where the man had emerged, and sped fast towards the same man. The Gytrash (image) were in pursuit of what Orynn presumed to be their pray. Orynn stood, stunned for a moment. Did his eyes deceive him? The boy was surely a student, but why? What was he doing in the Forest? Blasted imbecile!
Orynn fired into a sprint, his wand clutched in his hand as the snow scrunched under his feet. He was of course much too slow, and was barely keeping up with the specters. He cleared his mind, spitting out the first spell he could think of when it came to eliminating specters.
"Lumos!" His wand tip illuminated. But the pack of five gytrash galloped onward. Orynn stared at his wand tip as if it insulted him, before whipping it at the pack of ghostly looking dogs again.
"Lumos Eructo!" This time, the bright ball of light shot out from the Deputy's wand, and slammed into the snow-covered ground. The light dispersed after a small 'explosion' in which two of the five creatures wailed in pain before evaporating into the cold air. Specters, and many ghost creatures, hated light. Gytrash are especially vulnerable.
Orynn looked up, squinted his eyes after the last specters who had been much farther ahead. The gentlemen they were after was now slipping through the entrance door. Orynn couldn't see his face, but Orynn could've sworn he saw a...
Again his thought were halted abruptly. This time by a rather large looking, about the length of a adult human hand with the thickness of a finger from the same person, spike that had whizzed right by his ear. Crouching suddenly from surprise, Orynn turned to look around him. The sight before him made the breathe in his throat catch and his eyes widen. The light from his wand shone eerily on the creature that looked at him. It was on all four, and crouched down, as if it were going to pounce at any moment.
"He... he was your's." The voice was garbled, as saliva dripped from the Manticore's open mouth (image). This was a horrible looking creature. It looked like it had been created by the mashing of parts from other animals. It hissed and gurgled from it's human-like head and mouth. The sight was nightmarish, and churched the wizard's stomach. Orynn, who still had not responded to the creature, kept his eyes fastened on the end of the Manticore's tail, which whipped from side to side. Orynn gulped, there was enough poison in one of those stingers to be instantly fatal, and he backed up slowly, wand still poised, he'd forgotten all about the boy and the Gytrashes. Even when the booming sound of the front door closing echoed throughout the grounds.
"He... he is your charge. Your res-ponsibility. Yet, he roams free, disrupting the life within the wood. You... you will pay.." The Manticore barred it's teeth.
"Wait! What are you doing here?! Who are you--" But the creature had already lunged at him as Orynn instantly turned into smoke to have the creature just pass right through him. He rematerialized quickly though, taking a sharp intake of breath when he had done so. The cold temperature made it difficult to remain in non-solid form. Not to mention he was panicked, and that destroyed his concentration.
Furthermore, there were a billion questions running through his head. A manticore, here?! Outside the forest? These creatures ranked one of the most dangerous in all of Europe, he had no doubt that some made their home in the Forbidden Wood, but that did not explain why it was out here. Trying to kill him. These were semi-intelligent beasts, capable of speech no less. They would not attack a wizard, a staff member of the castle, without very good reason.
The Manticore came about again, and had now unfolded it's wings to appear much bigger and more of a threat. Orynn grunted as it stared him down. The sweat from his palm made the wand in his hand slippery, but he shot it to the sky, secretly crossing his fingers.
"Periculum!" He shouted, a large silvery looking firework torpedoed into the air, erupting high in the sky, sparks flying. The Deputy desperately needed help, as the Manticore poised it's tail and aimed at him, shooting another stinger.
Orynn jumped backward, falling onto his rear as the stinger landed into the ground. As he fell, he thought to shoot another signal for help into the sky. At the sight of the human loosing his height advantage, the beast came rampaging after the fallen Professor.
