1. We ask that you please do not post in any In-Character sections until your character has been approved, if it takes too long, please PM a moderator. Feel free to get to know us in the OOC chat area until we approve you.
2. You are allowed only up to one alternate account. All others will be deleted. You must go through the application process for your alternate character.
If you are going to be away from the boards for an extended amount of time, please let us know in the OOC chat.
3. There is no excuse for being rude to any other players. Please, be mature and civil about arguments and the like. If you experience any problems with any of the other members of the board, either IC or OOC, please PM one of the Mod Squad and we will do our best to resolve it quickly and discreetly.
4. Stay in character in the In-Character areas. If you need to include an OOC note in one of your IC posts, please specify that it is such. OOC comments are indicated in [square brackets].
5. Do not Spam! You may advertise your site in the Advertising thread. Excessive bumping will not be tolerated. Do not spam other boards in the name of The Secret of Magic. The Mod Squad takes care of advertising our boards. If you’d like to help us, please PM the Mod Squad first. You may personally invite players to the site, but please refrain from sending mass e-mails and other forms of spamming. Spamming will result in the suspension of your all your accounts.
6. Our In-Character goal is to tell a story. IC posts will be written in the third person, and in the past tense.
For example, good:
Zea headed down towards the dungeons, her wand lit. She was looking for something she had lost there earlier in the day – her gold ring.
For example, bad:
I head down toward the dungeons with my wand lit. I’m looking for something I lost there earlier today – my gold ring.
7. God-Modding will not be tolerated. This is when you control the actions of someone else's character. If you shoot a spell at another witch/wizard in a duel, it is up to that character to say whether your spell hit or not. You cannot post;
"Bob shot a stunning spell at Julie and she fell on the floor."
Instead, you post;
"Bob shot a well-aimed stunning spell at the distracted Julie."
and then the other player posts;
"Julie saw the spell coming at her, she tried to duck, but wasn't fast enough at it slammed right into her arm."
God-Modding also involves metagaming, which is using any information you know OOC in an IC context. For example, because you’ve read the books, you might know what a Hippogriff is. This doesn’t mean that your first-year, Muggleborn student knows what a Hippogriff is. Please use common sense.
8. Students have a restricted inventory of spells they can know/learn. There is a spell list in the rules section for years 1-3 and for years 4 and up.
9. Our boards are kept to a strict PG-13 rating. This means we will not accept any behaviour, content or language inappropriate to that rating. Racial slurs, derogatory terms, excessively foul language or nasty remarks against any kind of gender/race/sexuality etc. will result in the immediate deletion of your post. Repeat offences will not be tolerated and will result in the deletion of all your accounts. We do have language filters on these boards, and using anything to deliberately circumvent those filters is considered a direct violation of the rules. We’re trying to keep this a friendly, inviting environment.
10. Roleplaying is a great way to practice your writing skills. Using ‘Chat-Speak’ (i.e: lol, brb, yw, thnx, btw… Etc.) is inappropriate in a role-play setting. Please try to pay a little attention to spelling, punctuation and grammar. We are not extremely picky about this, but it’s much nicer to read posts that well thought out and well groomed.
Post format rules: Please do not resize the text in your post or change the font (other than to bold, italics, strikeout or underline). We allow different colours to be used for your character's speech and thoughts only. Speech goes in between quotation marks, thoughts are in italics.
Example of good posting:
Zea wandered into somewhere looking for somebody.
Where is he? She wondered, looking behind the giant tapestry of the one-eyed monkey.
"Hello? Where are you?" She called.
Example of bad posting:
Zea wandered into somewhere looking for somebody.
Where is he? She wondered, looking behind the giant tapestry of the one-eyed monkey.
"Hello? Where are you?" She called.
As you can see, option B is ugly and somewhat incomprehensible.
Please keep all posts looking similar! Pick a colour for your personality or use your house colour! (Please refrain from using another House's "official" colour).
