Stevie looked at the paper in front of him, sitting on the couch that was simply too small for anyone else, yet good enough for Stevie, not that much written in it. A bunch of other first years were writing letters to home, so why not him? Other first years were goofing off or talking excitedly about their first days. He never really liked writing. At all. But, he did it when he needed to.
His handwriting was easy to read, not messy at all. The letters were small and neat, no fancy cursive. All the letter said that his day was great, and he was sorted into Gryffindor. Of course, he also asked questions in his letter, the 'How have you been?'s and the 'How's this family member?'s present. But it barely took up half a page. He looked at it for a bit, then sealed it in an envelope. It had no return address on it.
Stevie realized something. Was his letter even going to be sent? He wasn't sure, now, if his family lived in the wizarding world or the 'muggle', as people called them, world. But the real root of the question was: Why didn't they tell him about everything? He shrugged, and clutched it, now looking around for his head of house.
If he wasn't there, he guessed he would just ask a... What were they called? Perfects? No... Prefects? Probably that.

The Head of House wasn't present in the Common room, but there were a few older students gathered by the window, looking outside. They seemed to be talking in rather animatedly about something.
"-and the way he blocked those spells? He probably could have sent them right back at him if he hadn't been invisible! He totally could have won, had the Deputy not cheated. Cheated! Would you believe it?"
Several of the others began nodding. "Still, amazing match though. I haven't seen anything like it before."
One of the girls looking outside the window blushed. "Not as amzaing as that new Flight Professor. I wish I'd stayed in first year just for that class. Maybe I'll join the Quidditch team."
The group of older students began to laugh. "You probably could." one of the red haired boys said.
"Really, Fred?"
"Sure. As a Bludger maybe."
Aghast as many of the students began bursting into laughter, she struck him in the shoulder and turned on her heels, leaving the room. The rest stayed behind and continued to talk about the duel.

Stevie was darting his eyes around, looking at people. He heard some stuff about a match. Though, Stevie did agree with the girl. He WAS amazing. Though, his definition of amazing and her definition of amazing were too completely different amazings. He saw her turn and walk off, he may as well ask her.
Stevie tried to catch her attention. "Hi!" He really hoped she wouldn't just keep walking, but she did. Right out of the room. Stevie frowned slightly, then turned back. People were either talking, doing homework, or writing letters. That was just perfect. He didn't KNOW where his head of house's office was, so that was just great, too. Stevie continued looking at people, trying to figure out which one to talk to. There was nobody. Stevie should really start talking to older students more. Then, he'd feel more comfortable asking them questions. Well, that was normal Stevie, around older people.

"Nick should be in his office, right?" asked one of the girls who came down from the stairs. It was the Prefect, Miss Wood. She directed the comment to the group of boys.
"Oi. Yeah, he should be. Wouldn't have been in the hospital wing that long; he's tough as a Slytherin skull. Usually in his office around this time anyway. Worried?" asked Fred.
"Nah, I just forgot my book in his class. Need to pick them up. Later!" she said as she began to walk out. The boys said their goodbye's as she walked by them but stopped as she saw Stevie standing there. "Everything alright? Steven, right?" she asked, sounding worried about being wrong.

"Mmhmm. Well, my name. I was just wondering where you put letters when you finish writing them." He didn't mind Steven. Really, as long as people got his name right, he was fine. Except Steve. He didn't know why, but he did NOT like Steve.
(Sorry for the short post, but I'm really tired.)

She looked to Stevie, with a quirked eyebrow. "You don't have an owl to send letters with?" she asked, sounding rather curious.
The boys continued laughing in the Common Room.

Lilianne was sitting at a nearby table, busy writting a letter to her parents herself.
So far she had stayed rather quiet in the common room since term had started, reading her classbooks or playing with her hedgehog by the fireplace on her own, though tonight she did look up longingly to the group of laughing students by the window a couple of times.
When she heard Stevie and Wood talking, she took her nose off her paper and spoke up in a low voice.
"Well we're only allowed one pet, right? And he's got that cute Prairie Dog... There's school owls we can borrow, right? My sister said she used those to send us letters..."
Lilianne's voice trailed off at the end of her phrase. She looked as if the words had come out of her mouth on their own, and she felt ashamed of having interrupted a prefect.
She blushed slightly and bowed her head over her letter again, her messy hair hiding part of her face.

"Well..." He started, but thankfully another girl interrupted. Of course, Floyd poked his head out of Stevie's pocket at 'cute' and 'prairie dog'. And, of course, as Floyd does, he scurried out, and to Lilianne. He stared at her, head tilted, waiting to be offered a hand to sniff. All Stevie could do was laugh nervously.

"Oh, Hi there!" Lilianne presented her hand to Floyd, who sniffed her hand before allowing her to scratch his head. "You're a nice little fellow! Want to meet Dinsdale? Hey Din, come on out!" She said in her solt, shy voice.
Lilianne's hedgehog poked his head out of the hood of her cloak hanging on her back and climbed up on her shoulder, then down along her arm to the table where he trottled to check out Floyd.

Floyd was just about to run up her shoulder to rest there before seeing this new creature. Dinsdale, eh? Floyd watched him come down her arm. Floyd gave Din a look oh... Something. Confusion, joy, and some other stuff all blended into one awkward feeling. He REALLY wanted to climb up her shoulder, but he didn't. Instead, he bounced over to the hedgehog, and started sniffing him.
Once satisfied, he turned his head to Lilianne, and approached her hand carefully and lifting a paw, as if asking permission whether he should climb up or not. When did Floyd ever do THAT? Stevie's guess was that he knew this was a social place, with many people he didn't know, and he knew Stevie didn't want to be embarrassed by someone, caught unexpected, jump around because of suddenly being climbed on by him. For that, Stevie was thankful.

"Oh! Go ahead, be my guest!" Lilianne giggles as Floyd gleefully climbs up to her shoulder.
Dinsdale looked up and let out a little squeal.
"Aw, don't be jealous, Din, why don't you go meet him? Don't worry, I wouldn't trade you for all the gold in Gringotts."
The hedgehog turned to Stevie and approached him carefully.
"You seem to love animals a lot, too. I've noticed in Care of Magical Creatures... I'm Lilianne Wesker."

"Stevie Copeland." He said, grinning, offering a hand to the hedgehog. Meanwhile, Floyd curled up on her shoulder, giving a small chirp. Content, he closed his eyes and attempted to fall asleep. Of course, it didn't really work, Floyd wasn't really tired. So, he simply lay there, breathing softly.

"Mind your hands..." Lilianne warned as Dinsdale climbed up to Stevie's shoulder so he could sniff his face.
"Hum, hey, I was just finishing this letters to my parents... Do you mind waiting a bit before you go to the owlery, so I can go with? I don't know where it is."
"Ahh, that is, if you were planning to show him, miss Wood..." Lilianne added tentatively, looking up at Wood...

Miss Wood looked at the exchange between the two first years and almost turned into a puddle of affection as she saw botht he prairie dog and hedgehog pets.
"They are just about the cutest things I've ever seen!" she exclaimed as she began to look at them. "They're are so adorable!"
She watched them talk for a bit, smiling happily at seeing them talking to each other and breaking the ice. She smiled when the girl, Lilianne, looked terrified about having interrupted her. She only smiled reassuringly.
"No, that's alright, Lilianne. I was actually on my way to see Professor Lannsman and get my books from his class. If you both need to be guided to the Owlrey, you can tag along with me to see Professor Lannsman before we take a trip to the Owlrey. it's up to you, otherwise someone else can show you." she said, smiling. She didn't seem irritated at all.

"That would be very nice of you, thank you. I'll only be a second..." She says, smiling as she turns back to her letter to hurridly scribble the final salutations.
