It was a good deal of time until the Gryffindors returned to the Common Room. Gavin and Fred were still talking to each other, tryign to keep their heated discussion hush hush among the sleeping students.
"Look , we can't necessarily go around breaking the rules, even if we're trying to help."
"Listen, Gavin, my dad's been breaking rules since he could breathe. I have a prestigious line of family honor to hold up with my siblings, and I inted to do it."
"But we don't even know what those things are!"
"Which is precisely why we need to find out more information about them."
"But going into the Forbiden Forest, Fred?"
"Where else would something as nasty as that come from?"
"Orynn's office."
"Point taken."
"You still can't be serious though."
"Gavin, people might have died, could have died! We need to do something, and I'm not going to sit idly by until something tries to munch on us again."
"When are you going? Tonight?"
"Now you're the one who can't be serious. I might be dumb, but I'm not brain dead. In a few days, maybe."
They had moved along to one of the windows, nearby Stevie's bed.
"They really came out of nowhere didn't they..."

Stevie had been lying face down in a pillow, trying to go to sleep. But people were talking. Gavin and Fred. About going into the Forbidden Forest. Stevie wanted to say something, but he didn't. Maybe if they talked to him first, he would find it better? It was worth a shot.
He shifted slightly, just enough to make a noise, but not loud enough to wake everyone up.

They looked over to Stevie quickly, as though they had been caught red handed but eased up after a few moments, looking back out the window.
"Yeah, they did..."
They remained quiet a while longer.
"Who you thinking of bringing with us?"
"Us?"
"What? You thought I'd let you go out there alone and have all the fun? Like hell."
Fred chuckled.
"Dunno. But we need to keep this on the down low. I want to know more about these things, where they might have been, if there are more."
"Wonder if this was the first time anyone saw them."
"Yeah. I heard Professor MacLeod might have seen one some time ago."
"Hope he's alright. Looked like a rough landing..."
They were quiet, looking out the window. The wind howled plaintively.
"I'm sure he'll be fine."

"You guys are loud." It was the first thing Stevie said in a while. Of course, his sleeping troubles weren't due to them being loud, oh no, it was that he thought it was his fault for everything. Which, in his mind, it was.

Both of their heads darted towards Stevie. Gavin frowned and Fred laughed.
"And you're not actually a zombie. Welcome back to the world of the living, Stevie."
"Sorry about waking you up, Stevie. We'll let you get back to sleep."
They began to move towards the staircase.

"I haven't gotten any sleep for about a week. I'm sure tonight won't be any different." He sat up, trying to find the figures of the two in the dark.

Both of them stopped at the foot of Stevie's bed and gave each other a quick glance. They moved towards Stevie.
"Take it you heard about what we were talking about then, huh?" Gavin stated non-threateningly.

"Yup." He said, groggily. He wondered if he would ever get any sleep. Probably, in a year or so...

"Well, I hope you understand when we say you'll not tell anyone."
"Secret missions are best done in secret. Last thing we want are the professors stopping us."
"Or catching us."
"Catching you, maybe."
"Hmph, yeah right."
They looked to Stevie.
"We intend to get to the bottom of this before anyone gets hurt again. If there's anything we can do, or find out, we'll try to do so."
"Enough people got hurt. Like Nick said, history can't be unlived, but if we face it with courage it won't have to happen again."
"You remember all that?"
"Course I do. Why wouldn't I? I was listening."
"I was listening."
Gavin stared at Fred.
"Well, I got the gist of it anyway."
Gavin sighed. "I know it must have been hard on you too Stevie. You haven't even picked up your guitar much, let alone speak. It's rough, but we're gonna make sure that kids like you don't have to get hurt like that again too."
"Jeeze, Gavin. You talk like it's your fault. Not like you opened the front door and tossed a steak into the Great Hall."

"Yeah, that's all fine and good, but what if you guys get killed out there? You saw what happened with the staff there, and there could be more out there. But, there isn't any staff out there." Stevie tried to reason with them, even though he highly doubted that they would change their stance. Stevie just hoped they wouldn't go out and get themselves killed... Then, it would be another thing that was his fault.

"Look, we're not going out there looking for a fight."
"Besides, we're much too pretty for God to let us die."
Gavin rolled his eyes.
"We're just trying to find out any information at all. If there are more, how many, if there are other types of creatures, if they've been out before."
"Yeah. And then kick their mutated butts."
"After we come back for help."
"And tell them we went into the Forbidden Forest?"
"Why not?"
"It's forbidden, remember?"
"Yeah, so?"
"That means we're not allowed in there."
"Since when have you become a stickler for rules?"
"Ouch. That hurts."
"Had it coming."
Fred shrugged, conceding to the point.

"Neither were we, today. But they attacked us anyway. Just... Do what you want. And don't die. Really." He sighed, quietly, and lay facedown in his pillow once more. Muffled, he said, "And Fred, you so did have that coming." He once again resumed his faint glimmer of sleep, doubtful he'd actually go to sleep. He guessed he was lucky he was probably the biggest fan of sugar in all of Hogwarts.

"Come on. Let's go plot in the Common Room."
"Let's. I may not be as good as some of the older students, but I'm going to do anything I can to prevent this from happening again."
"I know, Gavin. Me too. We'll take the fight to them soon enough."
They walked off, leaving Stevie to his own thoughts.
