Orynn sat unprofessionally on his desk. He was cross-legged and facing his the door that would soon be admitting his students. A cage beside him held a black and yellow lizard which seemed to be sleeping.
He had asked his first and second years to come in today with their animal, as if would facilitate their lesson for the day. Time to get practical.

Lilianne arrived to class with the first wave of students. She was clutching Dinsdale the hedgehog to her chest.
As she passed the Professor she barely glimpsed at him and quickly looked away, slightly hurrying her pace and taking a seat on the second row again.
Obviously she was still worried the Professor would eat her alive.
She set Dinsdale on her table and took a little ball out of her pocket, playing quietly with him while she waited for the class to start.

Orynn drummed his fingers on the desk, waiting for more students to arrive. He did however catch sight of the hedgehog. Almost ridiculous, he thought to himself, why was it that students these days were getting more and more creative with their familiars. If it's simple, and works, why make it more complicated? Orynn was a big fan of owls.

Kel stepped into class, spotting Lilianne quickly. She was obviously trying not to attract attention, keeping her head down as she played with a hedgehog, which was apparently her familiar. Kel slid into one of the empty seats near the quiet Gryffindor, slinging her bag over the back of the chair. Her purple eyed black cat sniffed around the legs of Lilianne's chair, then hopped up onto it to get a better look at the strange animal Lilianne was playing with. The curious cat nosed Lilianne's hand, then carefully approached the hedgehog. "Tiria!" Kel hissed. "Be careful!"
Tiria gave her a baleful stare, then meowed to Kel. 'Do you think I don't know that? I'm being careful.' Kel knew that Tiria's meows sounded like normal cat noises to other people, but she could understand everything Tiria said. Sometimes other people could, too, but not often, and Tiria seemed to be the one who decided.

Orynn clapped once, loudly, and the sound echoed in the room and the students grew silent. Even the animals ceased to twitter and croak, all apparently surprised or intimidated by the white-haired deputy.
He let himself fall off his desk, landing on his legs. His cane was nowhere in sight as he apparently didn't need it to help walk anymore. He paced along his platform as he looked at his students and posed a question.
"Can anyone here tell me the nature of Switching Spells?"
{OOC: Kel, I'm really sorry about doing this to you again, but I kinda have to. Please remember that your character would not know any of what they learned from the classes held on the last board. Also, when you get the chance, I'm gonna post a thread for the Groundskeeper soon. Thanks}[/color]

Transfiguration being one of her sister's favorite subjects, Lilianne had heard quite a bit about it. She shyly put up her hand and said in a low voice, "It's when you turn something into something else, Professor?"

Orynn cocked an eyebrow. Nothing gets by this one, now does it?[/i] He thought to himself.
"That answer could be applied to all of Transfiguration in general, Miss Wesker. Switching spells, however are the most basic form of Transfiguration and have a very specific purpose." He'd wait a little while longer to see if anybody else was brave enough to respond.

Kel listened to this short exchange, then thought about the rather obvious name of the spell. She poked her hand up and volunteered an answer. "Is it like switching something out for something else? Like if you had a shovel with a wooden handle and a shovel with a metal handle and you switched them?"
((OOC: Okay, I'll just play it dumb and let Lilianne get some points.))

Orynn didn't even seem to take a moment to ponder Kel's response.
"Unfortunately, no Miss Lindenshield. The example you give speaks to location I believe, but your example does provide a good way for me to explain.
"If you are a gardener, for example, and you have a shovel in hand. If the task at hand changes frequently, the switching spell will permit you to keep the same tool. If you need to rake instead of shovel, the a successfully cast switching spell will transform the spade, into a rake. If you need to sweep, than another such spell will change the metallic sweepers into tied-together straw.
The function of the Switching Spell is to change one single element of an animate, or inanimate object. This can be a minor change such as color, or can be something more like; quills into feathers."
Orynn took a moment, letting that all sink in. "The incantation for which is Suppono Res Rei. Are there any questions?"

Kel listened closely, keeping half an eye on Tiria, who seemed to be doing well with Lilianne's hedgehog (or was it a porcupine?), but she didn't want to take any chances with distractions in Professor Orynn's class. She had nothing against life, even if it was getting a bit tame around here.
She understood most of what the professor was saying, then ran it through her brain again, scribbling down key points, understanding more and more. She didn't have any questions, and was already getting to the part of Orynn's class where her head started to hurt and she had had enough of the lecturing and wanted to have some hands-on practice.

Lilianne didn't have any question, and simply stayed silent, taking notes.
She wasn't too worried about the pets, since she knew Dinsdale usually got along with other animals, and could very well defend himself otherwise. Besides, the cat didn't look like she craved a spiky meal.

"So, I would like for you all to please, practice the Switching spell on your familiars. Do not worry, there is no irreparable damage that can be done here. Just remember the steps to all spells of Transfiguration. First, clear you mind. Second, envision your end result and hold the image firmly in your mind. Then cast your spell, swish and flick your wand, and that's that. Take your time, there is no time constraint you need concern yourself about."

Lilianne's eyes widened almost cartoonishly and her mouth dropped open as she listened to the Professor.
She looked back at her hedgehog in utter terror. She had been suspecting that they would be transfiguring their pets when Professor Novim asked them to bring them, but it didn't lessen her shock when he confirmed it.
"Do not worry, there is no irreparable damage that can be done here"
Just how sure is he?
She looked from Dinsdale to her wand for a bit, trying to figure out a way to try and transfigure him while minimising the chances of blowing him to bits.
Maybe a color change is safe enough...
"Hum, Din, I'm gonna try to change your color, okay? Don't, uh, don't be afraid... The Professor will help us if something goes wrong, okay? It'll be okay, I promise..."
She scratched Dinsdale's ear for a bit and stared at him, first trying to empty her mind, then picturing the hedgehog a nice shade of saphir blue.
She raised her wand and swished it. "Suppono Res Rei..."
Nothing happenned.
She tried to concentrate harder on her mental picture, and tried again.
"Suppono Res Rei."
Still nothing. Dinsdale cocked his head, looking puzzled.
Maybe I AM hopeless...
I know you have it in you to be a witch. Practice, a little confidence and guidance, and you'll be a capable one too.
Lilianne took a deep breath, and cleared her mind again. Concentrating again on the mental image of a blue Dinsdale, she swished and flicked her wand a third time.
"Suppono Res Rei!"
Dinsdale gave a little start, and turned a bright shade of canary yellow.
Lilianne gasped in shock.

Kel turned to her cat, wondering if Tiria would put up with this. Tiria promptly answered this question, turning her head and telling Kel on no uncertain terms that 'You may attempt to change any aspect of me, as I can easily just change it back. However, I shall not aid you with my magical powers. You are learning this for yourself.'
Kel stuck her tongue out at the cat, then pulled out her wand as the black cat jumped lightly up onto her desk. Kel concentrated, picturing Tiria with bright yellow ears and pointed the wand at her cat. "Suppono Res Rei." she uttered, then she eagerly studied her cat. No yellow ears. Kel squeezed her eyes shut, gripped her wand and again said "Suppono Res Rei!" Her eyes leapt open, but Tiria's ears were still glossy black.
Kel pulled all her will power together, determinedly pointed the wand at her appraising cat and commanded the black ears twitching on the top of her familiars' head; "Suppono Res Rei!' Tiria started slightly when she felt Kel's magic flood her tender ears, and she felt the magic settle in for a stay. Tiria looked congratulatingly to her human, who was looking in horror at Tiria's ears. The purple-eyed half-Kneazle immediately sensed something was wrong.
The Hufflepuff gazed dismally at Tiria's ears--which were now an eye-popping shade of pink smattered with small lime green polka dots--and almost cried with frustration and disappointment. But she gathered herself together and reined in her anger and frustration, converting it into strength which she poured into the spell she was again starting. The picture of Tiria with Hufflepuff yellow ears immediately focused itself and Kel pushed her magic into it, saying the words that would (hopefully) make it happen. "Suppono Res Rei!" Kel loudly ordered, and felt her magic flow smoothly out of her, concentrating as it went through her wand and sinking into Tiria.
Tiria knew it had gone right this time. She felt the magic again come into her, but it felt better, more controlled and powerful then before.
Kel's eyes snapped open, almost not daring to look. She had nothing to worry about. Tiria's ears were the exact color of the House banner hanging in the Great Hall over the Hufflepuff table. Kel beamed with pride in herself, and she could feel Tiria's pride in what she always referred to 'her human'.

Lilianne's spell hadn't worked as planned, but at least she hadn't blown Dinsdale to bits. She decided to take the yellow color as a good sign, and to try again, thinking again of her head of house's encouragements.
I want you to understand, that courage is going from failure to failure without losing enthusiasm.
"I'll try again, Din. Just tell me if anything's wrong, okay?"
She pictured her now yellow hedgehog the same shade of saphir blue as she was trying before, and concentrated with all her might.
"Suppono Res Rei!"
Dinsdale turned a pretty outreagous shade of teal. He didn't seem to enjoy his new color, and grumpily rolled himself into a ball.
"Uh. I guess I'm getting closer to doing it right... How are you doing, Kel?"
