There is a note posted on the Ancient Runes classroom door.
"All classes this year are to take place in the dungeons. Please proceed to outside the Potions classroom, we'll continue from there."

Arcturus walked to the Ancient Runes classroom. He was wearing his ratty old trenchcoat that he loved so much, a fedora, high-ish boots, and comfortable sweatpants. Also, an orange scarf for warmth. He read the sign on the door of the classroom.
Hm . . . maybe I should've worn warmer clothes . . . .
He proceeded to the dungeons.

Isabelle walked swiftly towards the Ancient Runes class. Her friends Sera and Mary were trying to keep up with her, though she seemed to be ignoring them.
"Oh come on, Isa, you're just being ridiculous and you know it..." Sera said, looking quite annoyed. Mary on the other hand looked rather miserable.
They crossed paths with Arcturus as he was heading in the opposite direction. Isabelle plowed past him, but the other two stopped, puzzled.
"Hey, Arcturus..." Mary said, not being her usual cheery self.
"Where are you going? The classroom is that way..." said Sera.

Arcturus bumped shoulders with Isabelle as she brushed past him. He looked up. He wasn't in a particularly bad mood, otherwise he might have commented. Her two friends stopped to talk to him, but didn't seem to be real happy.
"Uh . . . apparently Ancient Runes is in the dungeons. What's up with Isabelle? It seems I always seem to have to have the bad luck to be near her when she's in a bad mood. Did something happen with you?"

[ooc: For very obvious reasons, lets assume this happens a few days before the Monster Dinner Party...]
"Ahh, just some silly girl stuff, she's upset with us for a dumb reason, but she really wouldn't like it if we went around telling people about..."
Sera stopped talking as Isabelle trampled past them again, obviously having read the sign and now heading for the dungeons, this time bumping hard into Mary as she roughed her way through the group and carried on.
Sera stared after her, and once she was out of hearing, she cursed at her friend, looking rather angry. She turned back to Arcturus and threw her arms up in the air in resignation.
"She thinks Mary was trying to make moves on that boy she likes."
"But I'm not! I swear!" said Mary, looking sort of panicky. "We were just having a laugh together, nothing else!"

Arcturus, though he chose not to admit it to himself, was curious. He waited till Isabelle had gotten sufficiently far away, then began to slowly walk toward the dungeons.
"Um . . . not that it's any of my business, but which guy would that be?"
Arcturus wondered if he would know this source of discord. If he was in Ravenclaw, he probably would. Some hunky sixth or seventh year, he presumed. Probably on the Quidditch team. Not that he really had anything against people on Quidditch teams, he just vaguely disliked the idea of them on principle.

"Well, hum..."
"We shouldn't say it, she's our friend."
"Yeah but I'm not sure I care right now, with the way she's been acting." Sera huffed.
"Still, Sera! It wouldn't be nice! She'd be even madder at us now!" Mary was flapping her arms pathetically.
Sera looked as if she couldn't contain herself any longer. Gossip is gossip.
"Can you keep a secret, Arc? I'm sure you can. Don't you think he can?"
"Maybe he can..." Mary looked defeated now.
"It's Fred Weasley! You know, 6th year..."
"Gryffindor..."
"Red hair..."
"Troublemaker."
"And she's been denying having a crush on the guy all year long! Telling us we were stupid to think that, but it was so bloody obvious! And yesterday Fred went and pulled a prank on Mary in Herbology and she and him have a great laugh and Miss Shut-up-you-guys-I-totally-don't-have-a-crush-on-him's been rude to Mary ever since!"
"I wasn't trying to flirt with him I swear, I just though he was funny is all..."
"He's a cool guy but I don't really see what she finds in him. I mean he's no Professor Novim..."
"Or Professor MacLeod... " Mary sighted dreamily...

Arcturus almost regretted asking. Clearly asking sixth-year girls for gossip was just inviting trouble. Still, though he staunchly avoided actually admitting it to himself, he didn't mind a little gossip.
"Um . . . yes. I can keep a secret, though you seem to have already come to that conclusion."
"That does seem to be a rather precarious position. There's not much you can do to make Isabelle feel better. Unless maybe you got Fred to play a trick on her too. But . . . maybe I'm wrong, but I thought Fred Weasley was a ghost?"

The girls snapped out of their rêverie about stud teachers at Arcturus' comment.
"See, that's the thing though, I'm pretty sure if Fred did pull that sort of prank on her she'd get pretty mad."
"No sense of humor!"
"What do you mean, a ghost? I've never seen a ghost attend class."
"...or eat."
"...or breathe."
"...or be opaque."
"...or being, you know... alive."
"What could possibly make you say he's a ghost?"

Arcturus was now very confused.
"But . . . wasn't Fred Weasley the brother of George Weasley? He died in the Battle of Hogwarts? He's a ghost now? Right? His brother is also Ron Weasley? Who's in the Ministry?
Maybe you're thinking of a different Fred Weasley? I dunno . . . I'm confused."

Mary put her finger to her mouth in a very comical pensive pose.
"Now that you mention it, it does ring a bell... Uh, I hadn't noticed they had the same name..."
"I read about the battle of Hogwarts, but I guess I didn't remember all the names..."
"I think it's pretty clear whats going on here!"
"Yeah, Fred's probably relat-"
"-He's a ghost disguising himself as a living student so he doesn't have to deal with death!"
Sera smacked her palm against her forehead.

Arcturus squinted his eyes at them in mock anger.
"I think you're making fun of me. I don't appreciate that. I don't like . . . fun."

"I wish she was..." Sera grunted through her hand as Mary kept going on a tangent.
"Oohhh, but it makes so much sense now! That's how he always manages to sneak around people to pull tricks! We should go and confront him to make him admit the truth..... Oh but what if he doesn't know he's dead? Then we might hurt his feelings if we do. What should we do?... I wonder what happens to the food he eats..."

Arcturus stared at the two teenagers in abject confusion.
"You guys make my head hurt."
Thankfully Arcturus' poor head was spared any further abuse as they arrived at the Potions dungeon.

Upon their arrival to the dungeons, the students found Professor Winters sitting there, dressed in her field clothes, which included jeans, a plaid button down shirt, her fedora, her whip, and a bag filled with various archaeological tools. She looked up from the map she was poring over as they approached, and gave them an excited grin.
"I've got some exciting news. I think I've found something rather important. I've been looking for it for a long time - in fact, it's one of the reasons I took the position here at Hogwarts, because my latest lead in fact led me here."
"What I've been searching for for so long is an ancient manuscript titled The Dànachd, which is Scots for poetry, as well as the words audacity, and presumption. It was written around the time Hogwarts was built, and contains a number of key elements to linguistic magic that have been lost for centuries."
