It was a cold day outside, much to cold to wear just a t-shirt. Claire had her scarf and glaves on her in an attempt to keep out the cold, although she was still a bit chilly as she had fairly delicate skin.
She was sitting under her favourite tree her knees tucked up to her chest slightly, she looked out onto the lake, which was very still. She brushed her hair behind her ear, and rubbed her hands together trying to make herself warmer.
She leaned back against the tree and looked up into the leaves, so far it had been an extremley uneventfull year. She hoped something more exciting would happen. She smiled as she saw a squirrel up the tree, sheltering under some leaves. She had always loved animals ever since she as young.

His exercise and training session done with, Nicholas was walking back towards the school grounds. He'd eased up on his training regimen some, realizing he was not in the shape he'd expected to have been in; the ball of glass had hit harder than initially anticipated.
He wore his usual boots and breeches, a thick red tunic with a heavy cloak he donned when done his training. A wooden sword was sheathed at his side and a bludger box was held in his right hand. Nicholas looked over to see Claire and fixed her a slight smile.
"Good day, Mademoiselle Walsh. How are you?" he greeted.

Claire's smile faded, ''oh god a teacher'' she thought, then looked at him, ''The head of the gryffies too'' she thought. Claire blinked, ''Hi er. . . Proffessor Lannsman, im ok i suppose'' she said, ''What's with the sword?'' she asked aloud, one eyebrow raised.

Nicholas' slight smile remained. "It's not school hours, Mademoiselle Walsh. No need for the professor business, lest you think it appropriate." he tossed casually, trying to be friendly to the wary Slytherin. He looked down to his wooden sword. "Oh, this? It's my training weapon. Need to keep up with my training regimen is all. This is a part of it, at least, to keep myself in a decent physical condition to sword fight. Soon enough, I just might be able to redirect-"
Nicholas stopped as he realized he'd been ranting some. He blushed somewhat and scratched his head in the slightly boyish manner he had about him sometimes. "Well, I'm sorry. It's not anything you'd find interesting in any case. I'm sorry if I might have interrupted you. I'll leave you to your business. Good day, Mademoiselle Walsh and take care." he fixed her with a small and polite bow as he prepared to go back towards the school.

Claire smiled, the tiniest bit, ''Well now you've started you might as well finish, what were you going to say?'' she asked deciding that, just this once she would give him a chance before she decided wether he was worth the manners or not.

Nicholas stopped from walking away and looked to Claire. He was never comfortable being subject to the juvenile or irrational ire and resentment from prepubescent and arrogant teens simply because he was of Gryffindor in his youth, and now the Head of that House. It got tedious after a while to see some adults never growing out of that small state of mind, where they only followed the protocol of childish rivalries. He hoped she was coming out of that mind set if she had decided to allow him to speak to her.
"Well, I've been training everyday for the most part of these passed two years to keep myself in fighting shape. More a hobby now, than it is practical. I've been using this bludger here to keep me on my toes. I've been able to fight off up to three at once, but that's another story. I've been practicing to redirect the projectile after I hit it. Much like batting a baseball but aiming where the ball goes." he said offhandedly as he plopped the bludger box and sat onto it, running a hand across his forehead. It might have been a tad chilly, but all that fighting had him sweating. The cloak felt soft and warm though, and did much to shield him from the occassional gust.

Claire listened as he spoke then said, ''But why do you do all those excersises, I mean couldn't you just go for a mile walk, or run instead?'' she asked

"Oh, well, I do a couple of miles of jogging in the morning." he said, grinning a little embarrassed. "I do it to stay in shape, but also to hone my swordfighting skills. It's something I've been doing for well over ten years now and there's something about it I find rather relaxing, in all honesty. I've gotten a little better over the years, and I constantly try to challenge myself more and more. What can I say, some people like to draw, or write, or read or walk, I find my art and expression in my swordsmanship."
He looked to her and shrugged. "I know. It's silly and rather abhorring for a wizard to enjoy such a brutish thing, but I look passed it and see the technique required. It's much harder than people give it credit."

Claire nodded, she was starting to fine this guy weird, yet likeable in an anoying way. She looked out onto the lake, ''I'd prefer to take my pet for a walk for excersise'' she said

Nicholas gave her a short laugh and a smile. "Mademoiselle Walsh, I think you would know by now, it's been almost three years I've been teaching DADA here; it's hard to take a peregrine falcon out for a walk, and I don't have a broom that can keep up with him."

Claire smiled, ''Do you not have a broom?'' she asked, ''I thought everyone had one'' she said.

Nicholas laughed. "Oh, no, no, no. It's not that. I do have a broo, of course. Hasn't left me since my Auror days, and in all honesty it's less damaged than I am. It's just that my broom will never go that fast. You see, peregrine falcons are the fastest birds on earth. They have an average air speed of 70-90 km/h, which is alright, and can fly as fast as up to 110 km/h. When they dive though, I'm not joking, they can go from 160-440 km/h. So you can see why I wouldn't try to attempt to fly with Gwydion. He doesn't like to lose, and I don't really think he can."
He smiled to her. "So, enjoying the great outdoors? It's a lovely tree you've picked to stay at."

Nicholas smiled. "Never really enjoyed studying myself, but I suppose it's a necessary evil. Still, sitting down by a tree and enjoying a good book was always fun in the early summer times, or early fall. I like the outdoors." he said as he looked about the school grounds smiling. "Enjoying your year so far?"

Claire nodded, ''It's been a bit boring though, and this year is all about studeing for my N.E.W.T.s'' she said, looking out onto the lake again, it was going to be a boring year.
