Neoma gulped... hard.
The building tension of the ceremony was fast approaching it's climax.. for her at least. There was a definite pattern here. A name was called, then silence, then the hat would speak, there'd be a loud cheer from one of the tables, then repeat. This constant repetition made Neoma more and more nervous. Wringing her hand uncontrollable.
She tore her hands apart and smoothed out her robes as she climbed the stairs to the stool and the hat being held by the man with white hair. Looking at him, wondering why such a young looking mad had such an old and out-of-place feature, she sat down on the stool.
Looking to the ground, she took deep breaths. One after the other.

Minka clapped a little for the new member of the house that she was made head of and nodded at the girl. Minka didn't seem as enthused about the sorting ceremony as everyone else at the head table, after all she thought it ridiculous that a Hat decided people's fate...
Hummm... I wonder. If that hat can see what will become of the little ones' lives, I wonder if I can guess what house they will be sorted into before the hat... Let's see if it's right.
"Excuse me, could you pass Minka the salt?" She asked the Muggle Studies professor seat next to her. The frail little old man did as she asked, a little puzzled by fact she just referred to herself in the third person.
She unscrewed the cap, and poured about half the shaker onto her bread plate, which she pulled towards her. She looked up at the students lined up to take their turn with the hat. Picking up the plate she swirled it around, all the while looking at the students with an unblinking stare. She looked back down, intently studying the patterns in the salt...
"Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, Ravenclaw, Slytherin, Gryfindor."

'Now now, dear' the Hat said to Neoma's mind only, as soon as it was placed on the anxious girl's head. 'There's nothing to be worried about. I'll simply place you where you know deep down you belong. Such a sweet and innocent young lady, you are. Yes, you would do best in...'
Yelling aloud, the Hat cried, "Hufflepuff!"

And with that all of Stevie's enthusiasm drained out. Gone. There was nothing left. The strange thing was, he didn't feel sad. He didn't feel disappointed. He just felt... Numb. He was in stunned silence. Both of his friends, gone, and to the same house! Now, he may not ever see them again... Well. At least they can befriend eachother. But still... What will Stevie do?
He shifted uncomfortably, and continued watching the ceremony, cheering empty-heartedly whenever someone else got on Gryffindor. His parents always told him he dwelled on bad things. Maybe this was shining through.
He didn't bother looking down the table, so he didn't notice the guy who came in late, blue. Literally. Or anyone else on Gryffindor. Someone may have just tried to console Stevie a bit... He didn't hear it. All he knew was that he was going to go... Somewhere, probably the bedrooms or something, and sleep. Maybe he'd wake up in his own bed. Maybe this was just a dream. A vivid dream. It couldn't possibly be... Could it? No, of course not. If so, he would wake up... Now.
Nothing. He was still sitting at the long table, with everyone else. Now, he was nervous. What was he in for? He couldn't know. All he was sure of, though, was that for at least a bit, his songs would have slightly less bounce and happiness and more moments where you'd just want to cry your eyes out. That was Stevie's thing. He could project his emotions clearly through music. All he had to do, now, was try his best to look at the bright side. He wasn't on that... Guy's house. Hopefully. he gave a quick glance down the table and back. Nope, no him. All he saw were a couple of guys who looked kinda like him, but not, and a blue skinned guy, an-...
Wait. Blue skin? Couldn't be. Dismissing that thought, he continued watching the ceremony.

Blushing slightly as he complimented her, Elsbeth thought to hersef, 'Oh bugger, I really bollocksed up this time.'
She sighed, then began. "Aesir... Don't feel bad. I did return your friendly banter that day in Diagon Alley; I'm as much to blame as you are."
She gulped once, and continued. "There will be a Hogsmeade weekend next month; the first of the year. We could go for lunch then, if you'd still like to."
"Yes, do drop by my office some time. I'm sure we could get to know each other beyond the playful words we seem to throw each other's way."

Kel cheered with the school as others were Sorted, but she couldn't stop worrying about Stevie. 'He'll be so lonely!' Kel thought. She and Stevie had become friends on the long train ride to Hogwarts, but how was the shy little Gryffindor going to get on? She supposed he would make his own friends, but that meant so did she. Kel sighed, turning back to the table. Kel looked up as the new Hufflepuff girl was Sorted, smiling at her, hoping the shy looking girl would sit by her.

Aesir smiled slightly.
He entertained a vivid image of himself dancing with glee on top of the table, but it quickly passed.
"That'd be very nice, Elsbeth. I'm sure there's more to you than a sharp wit and beautiful face. Now, you of all people should understand when I say that I'm trying to watch the sorting ceremony. Good lord." he said kindly, obviously joking at the end. He fixed her with a sideways glance, his crooked grin and a sly wink before looking out to the students.
Another one bites the dust. Bum, bum, bum, another one bites the dust. And another one down and another one down, another one bites the dust. Hey, I'm gonna get you too, another one bites the dust!
He began to tap the bass rythym to that Queen song on the table top.

Don looked up every once in a while, when a new student was sorted into his House. 'Look at them,' Dónall thought to himself, 'they're tiny, little eleven year olds. What could they possibly do for Slytherin. They're so frightened.'
Sighing, he turned his attention to the staff table; always a source of entertainment. 'Well, well, well, looks as though there's a competition going on. See there's the Headmistress trying not to be so obvious looking at the red head, and the red head's busy ogling the Runes Prof...'
His eyes scanning the room again, they briefly fell on a student being sorted. 'Bugger, that one's definitely a Huffle.' He had been right, for that seconds later she had been sent to the Huffepuff table.
Looking back at the staff table, his eyes were drawn back to the little triangle. 'There's defintiely something going on between those two.' The Headmistress and the new Flying Instructor were talking now, and at the touch of the man's hand, the Headmistress actually blushed!
Chuckling quietly, Dónall amusedly said to himself. "This year may just be alright after all..."

Zea, pretending to be focused on the feast, listened to what Aesir and Elsbeth were saying.
Well, I guess that's that. They're going on a date. Oh well. Flirting is flirting. Will have to corner Elsbeth later and get all the juicy details and live vicariously.
That's fine.
Her stomach grumbled again, and she was eager for the Sorting to end so the feast would begin.
She turned her head slightly when Aesir started thumping on the table.
She grinned. Then began whistling the tune quietly to herself.

Neoma giggled as she descended the steps quickly. She moved towards her now cheering house mates, and felt the warm feeling of acceptance. She sat beside another first year, who had been called up long before her. She sat in giddy silence, watching the rest of the ceremony.

Orynn repeated his motions, and proceeded with the sorting ceremony. The final batch of students had to be sorted. Immediately following Mrs. Tsylence, was a Ravenclaw, another Ravenclaw, a Slytherin and a Gryffindor. Then two consecutive Huffelpuffs were sorted, a Slytherin, another Gryffindor, and the final student to be sorted; one Malcolm Zinnoy, was a Slytherin.
With the sorting finally over, Orynn wrapped up his scroll tightly a placed it within his robes. He folded his hands one on top of the other and placed them in front of his body. Looking out to the students who were all now staring at him, Orynn knew he had made the right decision...
"Congratulations to all you first years on your sorting. You will find your houses to suit all of your needs while at Hogwarts. Each house is strongest in their own way, and you would each do well to respect that which your house holds dear." Orynn's tone became much more serious. It lowered, and his eyes became for slitted as he locked eyes with more than one first year. "Your House Common rooms are located in different areas of the castle. The prefects will show you to them right after we have all dined. They will also reveal to you the password to use to enter your common room. These passwords are a luxury to you, and it is expected that you keep it a secret between yourself and your house mates. If you are found guilty of divulging the passwords to others, there will be severe consequences." Orynn finished matter-of-factly.
His face than broke into a mild grin and he took some steps back, waving his arms to the Staff table behind him.
"Please keep quiet awhile longer, as our Headmistress would like to say a few words." As he walked around the Staff's table, Orynn nodded curtly and respectfully to Elsbeth. He walked around the table, behind the Lannsmans and the Astronomy Professor, before finding his seat beside the Headmistresses. He sat down without another word, looking to Shellivia on his left. Nodding to her, saying hello in his own way before looking back up to the Headmistress.

Smiling in thanks at her Deputy Headmaster, Elsbeth stood to deliver a short speech and mumbled the spell to raise her voice. “So, now that you have all been properly sorted, and we’ve made the older students sufficiently hungry and impatient, I still have a few things I’d like to share with you all.”
Elsbeth smiled widely at the room full of staff and students, and began. “This year,” she said, looking over to the Slytherin table, “we have a transfer student. Thomas Bertrand Angelo will be our Beauxbatons liaison to help rebuild our communal ties with that institution. If things work out, there will be a TriWizard Tournament next year. He has been sorted into Slytherin.”
Pausing for the cheers or clapping from the Slytherins that she knew would come; Elsbeth took a breath and waited. Resuming, she went on, “We also have some new professors this year; if there's anyone you don't recognize at the staff table, that's them," she said, as she turned to the seat next to her briefly and looked at Aesir.
"As we should all know by now, the Forbidden Forest is off limits to students. And please do stay away from Professor Taronin’s Grove unless she is present; it’s not very polite nor is very safe.” She looked pointedly at a select few students seated at the Gryffindor table. “Also, there is still a 10 o’clock curfew, and it really mustn’t be broken. Punishment will follow.”
Looking at the same group of Gryffindors, Elsbeth continued. “Weasley Wizarding Wheezes are now banned from school grounds; if you are caught with any Weasley products, they will be confiscated.”
Surveying the Great Hall, she decided that there wasn’t much else to say, so she turned to the Staff table. “And now, our Defence Against the Dark Arts professor and Gryffindor Head of House would like to say a few words before you enjoy the delicious dinner the House Elves have prepared for us.”
With a quick spell to lower the sound of her voice, again, Elsbeth seated herself and awaited Sir Lannsman's speech.

Thomas looked up as she mentioned him adn wondered if he was supposed to stand up. When she didnt ask him to, he set about looking around teh room once more gauging some of the other students. A few of the Slytherin's who had been looking at him with confusion now seemed to have the stupid expressions lifted from their faces with one that said tehy had solved a great mystery. Fools, he thought to himself. Nothing else really caught him eye for the students. Some of the girls were mediocore, but none were as attarctive as he would have liked. Then again, the one who had come in late wasn't too bacd... Looking up at the staff table he scanned them once more. There was a woman reading her plate, he raised his eye at this, a beast who for some reason was capable of speaking, and a family with children who really stood out. What a sad, pathetic school if they need livestock to teach a class, he thought to himself and shook his head. This was going to be a long year.

Shelly nodded her head back at the deputy headmaster. Moving a bit aside to let Nicholas out she spoke in a quiet voice, "Nicely done, no inncedents at all" before she settled back to her spot once Nicholas was out before she added, "but Miss. Jennings and Mr. Russle were late again."

Nicholas nodded and smiled a thank you to the Headmistress as he began to stand. Looking to Shelly, he mumbled a quick "I'll be sure to speak to Mr.Russel. Thank you." as she moved aside to let him pass.
He stood up, his goblet of pumpkin juice in hand, and walked around the table, gently squeezing his wife's shoulder as he passed her by, and made his way to the ceter of the raised platform. He looked to the smiling faces of his students, a hand resting calmly on the hilt of his sword concealed beneath his cloak. Nicholas stood center stage, a figure shrouded in black with an earnest, heartfelt smile. Nicholas cleared his throat, before he began to speak, his voice filling the space without the aid of magic.
"Welcome home to Hogwarts, young ladies and gentlemen. I look forward to seeing what this year has in store for us all, and for what all of you can bring to the table, so to speak. It is also my hope that it will not only be the job of our Prefects to aid the first year students here, but that everyone will take their part in making them feel welcomed; we've all been in their place."
His cheery disposition slowly began to fade as his voice took on a more solemn quality. "But, I digress. I stand before you today, not as a teacher, mentor or Head of House, but as a fellow wizard. A wizard who has lived through a life that has been altered for the better, a life that I was permitted to live, and that most of your parents were permitted to thanks to one man."
He looked across the sea of students, looking in many of their eyes.
"Harry Potter."
Most of the murmuring and idle chit chat disappeared at the mention of that name. "Of course, his struggle against Voldemort was a joint effort with the help of many of his friends and supporters, but he nontheless played a key role in the destruction of the Dark Lord himself, and brought about a revolution in the wizarding world. As you all know, Harry Potter died in a car accident several months ago, reminding us that even heroes are mortal. And that is why, as an ex-Auror, who has firsthand seen his good works, I would like us all to pay our respects to him."
He raised his goblet in the air, the cloak moving aside and allowing the students a rare opportunity to see his longsword by his side. "A toast; to the man who helped your futures be. To Harry Potter!"
The name echoed throughout the Hall for some moments as goblets were raised in commemoration to the fallen hero. Once he finsihed the goblet, Nicholas stood for a few moments in silence to pay his respects.
Not allowing the moment to linger too long and having the students become restless and disrespectful to the dead, he continued on. "As Head of his former House, I thought it a matter of respect to the fallen in a way we Gryffindors know best; by fighting for something we think is right."
Several murmers of confusion, and excitement rippled through the crowd. "I placed an open invititation to duel before the faculty, to commemorate Harry Potter, in hopes someone would accept."
Nicholas turned to face Orynn. "The Deputy Headmaster and Head of House Slytherin, has granted me the honor to accept my invititation, and to also pay his respects. The duel will take place tomorrow in the Great Hall itself, as well as a small commemorative ceremony afterwards. I would ask that all of you should come pay to pay your respects as well, but I can't force you all. I can only hope that you will be able to pay a moments homage to our fallen hero. Thank you very much for your time."
His stomach grumbled loudly, and he tried his best to bite back a griin. It wasn't completely successful. "So, whose hungry? Because I know I am."
Many of the older Gryffindor students began to laugh good naturdly to Nicholas' last comment and raised their goblets in a toast of "Here, here!".
As he began to move back to his seat, the food began to appear out of thin air on the plates on the tables.
Dinner was served.
