Kel, as shocked as everyone else when the bleeding Aesir careened into the Great Hall and crashed onto the long Gryffindor House table, ran with all the other students behind the staff table. Kel found herself jostled up quite close to the huge table/shield, and managed to stand up straight. There were a few third-year girls behind where she was, with her face to the wood of the table, and two of them were sobbing.
Kel was scared out of her wits, but she turned around and grabbed the girl who wasn't crying, a large blond-haired, blue-eyed Dutch, and told her "Grab one of your friends and put her up against the table! I'll get the other one!" Without waiting for a reply from the shell-shocked older girl, she grabbed one of the others who was crying silent tears, which ran down her face, which was frozen into a horrified O. She tried to talk to the older girl, but she didn't seem to hear her, so Kel dragged her around and pushed her locked-up body against the table, with her back to the awful sounds coming from beyond the large doors into the Great Hall.

"Hello, Fay! How are you tonight?" Kel asked good-naturedly, scooping up a bit more pork and dribbling gravy on her potatoes, then grabbing her fork and stowing it all away inside herself.
After it was safely inside her mouth, and not threatening to spill out, either, she looked around the room again. Nick had disappeared mysteriously, with Althea, a toddler/baby and a small girl seated next to her. Bringing her eyes back a bit closer to home, she studied the Hufflepuff table. There were a few first-years and a handful of second-years she had met, and she smiled nicely and waved at the ones that were looking her way, then continued her optical journey over to the Gryffindor table, where she recognized a few faces, including Lilianne's, but, sadly, didn't see Stevie. Her eyes then slipped to the Ravenclaw table, where Isabelle, Lilianne's older sister, was sitting slightly apart from her normal small group of friends. A small frown sidled onto Kel's face, and only got deeper as her gaze traveled, finally, onto the Slytherin table. There was that big one who had shouted at her in the courtyard a few weeks ago! She didn't recognize a lot of the other faces, though some seemed familiar from classes and repeated passes in the hall.
'More like 'bumps' than 'passes',' Kel thought slightly grumpily, then jerked herself out of her dingy thoughts and back to her happy peers, joking and laughing around her.

Kel arrived to dinner with the initial rush of students, heading for the Hufflepuff house table and sitting down. After a long day of spellwork and multiple tries to master the latest spell in Charms, she was ready for a large dinner. She filled her plate with a good dinner and started to eat, and only after had she taken the edge off her hunger did she glance around to see who she had plonked herself down next to and who else she knew who was around her. As she stuffed some more potatoes into her mouth, she wondered if she would maybe have a chat with Arcturus or Stevie. She hadn't been doing a lot with them lately. She had seen Lilianne in class, though, and looked around for her. She looked a bit dispirited, and Kel decided she would seek her out and do something with her after dinner.

Kel nodded smilingly, then got up. "Well, I'm pretty much done. I'll head up and join you guys!" She climbed over the bench, tripping slightly and grabbing Arcturus' shoulder instinctively. She apologized, then bolted before he could somehow get drunk.

"You're right," Kel replied, looking down at her dress. "It isn't exactly good for romping in, is it?" she grinned, smoothing out the velvet. "I'll pop something a little more practical on once I'm done eating."
She bit off a good-size chunk of a bran muffin she had snagged from a platter, washing it down with a gulp of hot chocolate that was just the right temperature for drinking.

Kel gave Stevie another fake suspicious look, then turned to Isabelle. "Sure! I know Tiria would love to come and socialize with some other animals!" she smiled at Isabelle happily. Edit: ((OOC: Here's a link for Kel's dress; just imagine it floor-length. She's also wearing a sheer green long-sleeve shirt underneath, with long princess-like sleeves. Just imagine that, too. Oh, and silver slippers to match the trimming. Give your brain a work-out! www.myclassicchild.com/custom/catalog/image.php?productid=17024))

Kel glanced at Stevie as he denied doing something. She smirked. "What didn't you do this time, Stevie?" she asked in a fake-exasperated voice, smiling so he would know she was joking. She noticed a Slytherin girl who rolled her eyes at the giggling girls, who were trying to scoot closer to the boy they had been goggling at. He was inconspicuously scooting farther and farther away from them. She hid her smile with her hand, ducking her head to hide her eyes, which were sparkling with mirth.

Kel smiled at Isabelle's joke, and waved at the Ravenclaw when Lilianne introduced them. She leaned across Arcturus to grab a basket of cinnamon rolls, glancing down the table. There were a good amount of Slytherins down a ways, and across from Kel a little to her left were a bunch of girls, giggling and glancing down the table at a black-haired Hufflepuff. Kel rolled her eyes, then turned her head the other way. To Kel's right down the table on her side were a few Ravenclaws who seemed to be having a debate, large Quidditch players arguing about - what else? - Quidditch and a girl and boy holding hands on the table. Kel brought her attention back to her immediate companions, popping the last bite of a raspberry tart into her mouth, brushing a few crumbs off her hands. The crumbs fell onto her green velveted lap, and with a small swish, she swept them off onto the floor.

Kel raced into the hall, then skidded to a stop and slowly, daintily, walked the rest of the way to the single table that was set for all the remaining students. Spotting Daviv, she waved happily, the floor-length dress she was wearing fluttering slightly around her ankles. Even if she wasn't spending Christmas with her family, she would look good, darn it! Her mother and father had decided to spend Christmas with her sick aunt to give her hassled uncle a break, but since Kel would have been another hassle, she was staying at Hogwarts over Christmas. Kel didn't mind as much as she might, though, because she would be spending it with - she surveyed the table - Stevie, Neoma, Lilianne, an older girl who looked like Lilianne and. . . Kel almost gasped. The drunk Ravenclaw from the Halloween Ball! She hadn't talked to him since then, but she had seen him at meals, and once in the library. She hoped he would be sober this time. Now, what was his name again. . ? Oh yeah! Arcturus Mac. . . Doog? Dingal? Drimbal?
Sliding into the seat next to Arcturus, she remembered how she had met him. He had been friendless, so Kel decided to be nice to him, even if he did seem to be glaring at the girl who looked like Lilianne, albeit half-heartedly. "Hello Arcturus!" she greeted with a warm smile. "And everyone else, too, of course! Although I don't actually know who you are. . . though you look kinda like Lilianne. . . ." she beamed at everyone around the table, and directing her last comment to the older girl sitting next to Lilianne.

Kel stifled another giggle, then turned herself back around, propping her feet back up on the bench. She remembered about the bottle of butterbeer just in time to catch it as it toppled off the bench, pushed by her small slipper-clad feet. She looked at it for a moment, then shrugged and took a hesitant sip. It was delicious! She had no qualms about drinking out of the same cup as the snoring Ravenclaw; if he were healthy enough to drink enough bottles to send himself to sleep, then he didn't have any germs to pass onto her. She took another, longer sip, then started gulping it, finally setting down the empty bottle.

Kel felt sorry for the Ravenclaw in spite of herself, and thought of something she could say to him. "Well, maybe you just need to meet more people? Like, go hang out in the Library or on the Grounds or something. I bet you'll meet plenty of nice people that way." she suggested, sensing that he needed a friend. Someone to talk to, at least.
The Hufflepuff tipped her head back, leaning against the wall as she looked up at the waving streamers. The music, she realized, had halted a few minutes ago, and now the bassist was once again alone up onstage. She still couldn't place where she had seen him before, but the figure seemed more familiar than ever.
She turned back to the deliberating boy next to her. "Yes, that's it. I think if you meet some more people, you'll get to know them better, and then eventually you might be friends!"

Arcturus' mumblings and drunken exclamations only went farther to concern Kel. When he attempted to drink from the now-absent butterbeer bottle, she had to stifle a giggle, but when she saw his extremely confused face as he asked if she knew where it had gone, she had to assume a serious face. "Er. . . Yes, actually. I don't think it's smart for you to be having any more, though." She informed him delicately, hoping this would not make him too mad. He hadn't seemed too happy about the 'drunk' remark. He seemed to think he could handle anything, when a few bottles of butterbeer had him stumbling over his words and confused as an ape.
Hoping to placate him, Kel hastily added "Erm, not that I think you can't. . . handle it, but I just think that. . . you know. . . since it's so close to bedtime, you might not want to drink. . . drinks." She didn't actually think that butterbeer was caffeinated, or that Arcturus might think of. . .other reasons as to why he might not want to drink copious amounts of anything near bedtime.

Kel looked vaguely concerned as she listened to his enebriated ramblings. "You can tell from the way I sit what House I'm in? Cool." Kel's thoughts drifted for a moment, then were brought back by his last comment. "Hello, Arcturus. Nice to meet you. What year are you in? And are you okay? You seem slightly. . . drunk." She decided to state the truth, and took a half-empty bottle of butterbeer out of his hand, setting it on the bench her feet had recently vacated.

Kel jumped slightly as a Scot with a broadsword and full battle regalia plonked himself on the bech next to her, but answered him as she would had he walked up to her in the halls. "My name's Keladry. Lindenshield. But everyone just calls me Kel. I know you're Scottish, but what's your name? I'm a first-year Hufflepuff, by the way." Kel added quickly, remembering that she wasn't wearing her uniform. She pulled her slippered feet off the bench she had been propping them on and turned her body so that she was facing the red-haired warrior.

Kel had watched the dance-off and then drifted away like the rest of the people, and was now sitting on one of the benches that was situated around the large room. She had danced for a bit, but as she was dancing alone it wasn't all that great, so she sat down. She was losing the speed she had had at the beginning of the night, and was now a bit tired. She rested her feet, sitting with her back against the wall and her feet on another bench she had put in front of her. She surveyed the room at large, but didn't really pay attention as she sipped a goblet of juice.
