"Oh, I agree, sir. Books mean a lot to me. They never let me down. I can forget my worries by immersing myself in a good story. Live another life for a bit. When I close the book down and go back to my own reality, often my own problems don't look so big anymore..." She said, looking over at the bookshelves a little sadly.
She took the picture of her family back and looked at her parents, and let out a little laugh. "It's sortof funny, how different people my parents are, yet they get along so great... My dad says all the time that he's got his feet on the ground, and his head in the skies, while mom has her feet up in the air, with her head on ground. Isabelle says she's proud of having all body parts in the same place, firmly on the ground."
Lilianne took another sip of chocolate. "I don't think I've figured out where I want to be in that picture. I'm not sure what I can do, yet..."

"Yes, it really is a nice place. I've spent a lot of time in there while he was working. My dad's job isn't as glorious as the one of an Auror or Healer or Minister of Magic, but I'm still glad he does it, since I got my love of reading from him..."
Lilianne giggled softly at Nicholas' reaction about her mother. "Wow, that doesn't happen often! Most of the people I talked to about her don't really care since she's not in a european team... I'll write her about it, I'm sure she'll be really pleased!
So you're a Quidditch fan, eh? I can't wait for the season to start here, I hear the teams are pretty good!"

"House elves! I haven't met any yet. I hear they're really nice people. I bet they make good sitters too!"
Lilianne looked puzzled at the tone of Nicholas when he mentionned her sister. She mentally shrugged it off and took a picture out of her wand pocket on the inside of her cloak, handing it to the Professor.
It was a recent picture of Lilianne and Isabelle, standing together with a tall, energetic blonde woman and a stocky black haired man wearing horn rimmed glasses standing behind them. They were laughing together, waving. Lilianne had an hedgehog currently sitting on her head, and a bat could be glimpsed flying in and out of the frame.
"That's my dad. His name is Harvey. I already told you he was a librarian, he works in the wizard's wing of the Public Library in Manchester... It's a really nice place. You have to go through the muggle children book section and walk through a big painting of The Chronicles of Narnia on the wall to get to the Wizards Wing."
"And that's my mom of course. You might have heard her name if you follow Quidditch... Andréa Lévesque, she's a chaser for the Québec Clabberts team."

Lilianne stiffened up again. "Oh no, nonono I'm not humoring you! I just, uh... I guess I might have been a little guilty of not looking past the auror job myself, even if I didn't ask to see your sword..." She put her mug back to her lips and muttered: "...yet..."
Lilianne looked at the picture of the waving family and, as she often does with wizard photographs and paintings, waved back at them.
"I haven't met Dr. Lannsman yet, I've only seen her at the Great Hall. I haven't managed to blow myself up so far after all... Does she keep your children at the hospital wing? Don't they, uh, get in the way?"

"Oh, well, I'll be the first to admit that stories like yours are pretty facinating, and uh, I guess some would be pretty easily struck in admiration over aurors and what they represent... I guess you can end up forgetting there's an ordinary person in there. With lives outside of their jobs..."
Lilianne laughed somewhat nervously.
"So uh... How is your family? Isn't it rather unusual to have an entire family living in the castle?"

Lilianne was leaning forward as Nicholas spoke of his father, obviously interested in tales of heroic wizards. Her impressed smile died however as Nicholas sat back, and she put her hand over her mouth.
"Oh no! I'm so sorry! What happenned to... oh... I'm prying too much, am I? I'll understand if you don't want to talk about him..."

As Nicholas poked the fire, Lilianne stared at him. Maybe she could trust her head of house to still respect her, in case she turned out like her father. There was at least that, but she still wasn't trusting the majority of the wizarding world to be so accepting.
Squibs are just too easy to pick on, they can't defend themselves against curses after all... But at least I had your mother to count on.
Accepting your mistakes, learning from them. It all made sense in theory, but the hardest thing to overcome was the possibility that she would never get better, that she just couldn't do it. So far the only classes where she'd been able to trust in her abilities were the ones where you didn't have to use a wand.
She looked at the picture. "Is that your dad? Was he an auror too?"

"You nearly died to save a muggle. I don't think it's as meaningless as some wizards would think... Maybe it's even more significant, actually..." Lilianne said thoughfully.
Yeah, I'm feeling better, Professor. I think the chocolate is helping, too. Hum... She looked down into her cup, looking worried. "Has, uh, has anyone said anything about what happenned, back in class?"

Lilianne looked as though she was still trying to argue her own worthlessness but was running out of arguments against the Professor's.
"I, uh... Yes, I would like another cup very much, if you don't mind..." she said, handing him back her empty cup.
"Oh, Sir Lannsman, you were wondering about where I read up on you... Well erm, when I watched your duel I heard the older students talking about you and how you got knighted, and I know how word of mouth gets so I wrote my father that night, and he looked up in the archives and sent me a copy of an article from the Daily Prophet about your knighting and your work as an auror. He's uh, he's a librarian. So it was easy to find out. "

Lilianne sat silent for a while, finishing the mug of chocolate, musing over the professor's words.
"You might be right, professor, and I wasn't really expecting to be as good as my sister, right away... But so far my scorecard's been pretty bad, hasn't it? Not just in your class, either. It just looks like magic and me always add up to disaster. The more I try the more I start being afraid that..."
Lilianne stopped herself. She might have said too much already. The professor had been so nice to her, but what would he think of her if she ended up...
But he's so noble, he was knighted!
But those blood status fanatics consider themselves noble, too...

Lilianne looked pretty embarassed as she took the box of tissues.
They always know when I've been crying, I wish I could find a way to hide it better...
She wiped her eyes as Nicholas went on, and stared at his scar as he pointed it out.
"Of course you can... Professor, I know you're trying to be nice but you must think I'm a complete coward if I can't handle a harmless spell like this. It's nothing compared to what you've faced, I've read up on you!
...Oh no. I've ruined your class, didn't I? I'm so sorry..."

In her time alone, Lilianne had managed to take control of her breathing back, and looked rather calmed down when Nicholas came back, though her face wore the tell-tale marks of someone who had been crying, even if she had wiped her face before he came back.
She still sounded agitated as she spoke quickly: "I'm okay, Professor, I calmed down, I'm sorry. I didn't think this was going to happen to me again, it has been a while since the last time... At least this time my magic didn't go out of control this time,...
I'm sorry, you caught me by surprise and it was the first time I was cursed, and I don't think I like that curse very much... I just felt so helpless, you know?
I should have expected you to curse me, I mean why else did you ask for a volunteer, and this is what we're learning and it's important for our safety and all, and I know we're safe and this is what you're here to do for years and this is all in control and I'm sorry I don't know why I still panicked!"
Lilianne tried to take a sip of the chocolate but her hands were shaking and she spilled a little of it on the carpet.
"Oh no! I'm sorry!" She took a deep breath and steadied herself, then took a few sips of the hot drink.
She sank back on her seat. "I'm such a clutz..."

Still gasping for breath, Lilianne nodded quickly. She watched her teacher leave and raised her knees up on the chair, hugging them and ducking her head on top of them.
Come on now, you've been through this before, breathe in, breathe out...

"Oh! Professor Lannsman has been really nice with me. More patient that I'm worth, I think... In the second class I was trying to cast the relaxation charm, and I threw my wand at a boy's head!"
Mary nudged Lilianne gently, grinning. "At least you didn't get him in the eye! Tell me he was a Slytherin, and I'll say you deserve a medal!"
Sera smiled softly. "Honey, this is a school of witchcraft and wizardry. We're here to learn. Of course it's going to be hard at first. If you already knew eveything, you wouldn't need to be here, right? You're allowed to make mistakes. You just have to learn from them, pick yourself up and go on. Practice makes better! And one little accident isn't the end of the world. It'll be forgotten soon enough."
"Well... I also nearly knocked Professor Novim down, this week..."
Sera just stared at Lilianne a moment, her mouth slightly open, while Mary let out an impressed whistle.

Lilianne raised her head from her sketchbook. Dinsdale had just let out a happy squeal, then a distant screetch was heard. She looked over and saw Henson flying towards her Hedgehog. The bat landed on the ground and both pets sniffed each other, happy to see each other again, and started playing together.
"Hey, Lil!"
"Oh, hello, Isa!" She said, beaming at her big sister. "And you must be Mary, and you must be Sera. Isabelle told me lots about you two!" She told the two friends, identifying them correctly.
"Nice to finally meet you! Ohhh, did you draw that? May I see? Wow, you're really talented!" Mary put down the flowers she had been braiding together and took Lilianne's sketchbook to look through it.
"How have you been doing so far in Hogwarts, dear?" said Sera, sitting down next to Lilianne.
"Oh, well, I guess it's been okay, so far."
"Oh come on, don't be shy, tell us everything! Have you made friends? What do you think of the teachers? Have you been able to cast some spells yet?"
"Oh... well... I guess I'm not really good so far. I'm okay with theory, but when it comes to doing actual magic, I guess I'm too nervous and it's been reather disastrous so far..." Lilianne went on for a bit about her insecurities. She didn't feel ashamed talking about them to her sister, and since she hard heard so much about her best friends, she felt she could trust them.
